Evaluating the impact of Mediterranean dietary adherence on psychological distress and Wellbeing: The MoodFood pilot study

In a setting where psychological distress is increasingly recognized as a public health issue, dietary factors may offer pathways for enhancing mental wellbeing. A recent study investigated the effects of an online Mediterranean-style dietary intervention in adults, emphasizing its real-world applicability.

Over 6 to 12 weeks, 122 participants engaged in a self-guided program to promote adherence to the Mediterranean diet. To assess the effectiveness, researchers utilized the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MDAS), the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10), and the WHO-5 Wellbeing Index, both before and after the intervention.

The findings were notable: dietary adherence improved significantly, as indicated by a change in scores from 7.35 ± 2.17 to 8.89 ± 3.06 (z = −4.78, p < .001). Participants also experienced a marked reduction in psychological distress, with scores dropping from 19.31 ± 5.80 to 15.66 ± 4.78 (z = −7.51, p < .001). Additionally, wellbeing saw a positive shift, as evidenced by an increase from 12.50 ± 4.25 to 16.62 ± 3.36 (t(121) = −11.69, p < .001).

Interestingly, the study found no significant correlation between dietary adherence and psychological outcomes, implying that other factors may influence mood changes. This indicates the complexity of the relationship between diet and mental health.

Despite important insights, the study is constrained by the absence of demographic data and a control group, and by its reliance on self-reported measures, which may limit the generalizability and causal interpretation of its findings. Furthermore, item-level data were unavailable, limiting the ability to assess reliability within the sample. Nonetheless, this research provides foundational evidence for scalable, food-based interventions to enhance mental wellbeing outside clinical settings, marking a significant contribution to the field of nutritional psychiatry.
