Allostasis is the process by which the body responds to stressors in order to regain homeostasis.
This stress response involves coordinated changes across the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems that help the body adapt to physical or psychological demands. When a stressor occurs, the body can temporarily alter heart rate, hormone activity, energy use, and other physiological processes. These responses are designed to support adaptation and recovery. Nutrition can influence these processes by providing nutrients needed for normal metabolic, neurological, and physiological functions during periods of stress.
From a nutritional psychology perspective, allostasis is the repeated or prolonged stress that may interact with eating behavior, appetite, digestion, and other aspects of the gut-brain connection. Stress can affect food choices and digestive function, while dietary patterns can influence metabolic and physiological processes involved in stress regulation. Understanding these interactions helps explain why nutrition, stress, and psychological well-being are often studied together when exploring the relationship between food and mental health.
