Association of Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) and Depressive Disorders

This review examines the link between inflammation and depression, focusing on core features of the disorder that show more consistency than the syndrome as a whole. These core features include overreaction to negative information, changes in reward processing, cognitive control decline, and somatic symptoms. The review summarizes the neurobiological basis of these features and explores how inflammation may influence them, particularly through exogenous inflammation in experimental studies. The findings suggest that inflammation is likely involved in the first three core features but have less evidence supporting its effect on cognitive control. The review concludes with recommendations for future research on inflammation’s role in the development of depression and other mental illnesses.
