Role of Nutrition in Children and Adults With ADHD and Neurodivergence

The investigation into the nutritional aspects of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and related neurodivergent conditions is gaining traction. This study involved a community sample from the UK, comprising 57 participants: 47 children with a mean age of 10.1 years and 10 adults with a mean age of 29.8 years. The focus was on measuring vitamin, mineral, and omega-3 fatty acid levels, as well as identifying food intolerances, in relation to psychological symptom scores reflecting ADHD severity.

Key Nutritional Findings

The results revealed a concerning trend of nutrient insufficiencies among both adults and children. Notably, low levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, vitamin D, and B vitamins were observed, all of which are critical for neurotransmitter function. In particular, a strong negative correlation was noted between magnesium levels and disruptive behavior scores in children (rho = −0.597, p = 0.024). Additionally, the omega-3 index showed a similar negative correlation with Learning and Language Disorder scores (rho = −0.601, p = 0.018), suggesting that lower nutrient levels may coincide with heightened ADHD symptoms.

Furthermore, over 80% of participants exhibited high reactivity to dairy products, with over half intolerant to wheat and gluten. These food intolerances could be contributing factors to the complexity of managing ADHD and related symptoms. The study indicates a potential connection between dietary habits, gut health, and neurodevelopmental challenges, underscoring the need for a nuanced understanding of food relationships in neurodivergent individuals.

These preliminary findings present a strong argument for further research into the role of nutrition in ADHD and similar neurodivergent conditions. While the study demonstrates important relationships between nutritional deficiencies and ADHD symptoms, the authors emphasize the necessity of larger, more diverse study groups to validate and expand upon these initial observations. A holistic approach that integrates nutritional profiles with psychological assessments is recommended for future investigations.
