Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is associated with increased consumption of ultra-processed foods among children

The relationship between dietary habits and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) warrants attention, particularly regarding the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF). This research aimed to identify the correlation between ADHD diagnosis and UPF intake in children, utilizing data from the 2015–2016 Israeli Kids Health and Nutrition Survey. This nationally representative cross-sectional study collected data from parents and guardians through face-to-face interviews, direct anthropometric measurements, and dietary recalls.

In total, 1,135 children aged 6 to 11 years were assessed, of which 111 had a physician-confirmed ADHD diagnosis. The findings indicated that the median UPF intake was 342.9 grams per day, accounting for 16.7% of the total food weight consumed by the participants. Upon adjusting for variables such as age, sex, socioeconomic background, and dietary fiber, energy, and alpha-linolenic acid intake, a significant association emerged. Specifically, children with ADHD had a higher likelihood of consuming above-median amounts of UPFs, both in grams per day (OR = 1.622, 95% CI: 1.010–2.604) and as a percentage of total food weight (OR = 1.652, 95% CI: 1.058–2.578). Linear regression analyses corroborated these results, revealing no variation in UPF consumption based on stimulant treatment status.

This pioneering study serves to establish a clear link between physician-diagnosed ADHD and increased UPF consumption, both in terms of absolute weight and as a percentage of dietary intake, irrespective of stimulant medication use. By shifting focus from general unhealthy eating patterns to the specific intake of UPF, this research contributes to ongoing public health discussions. The identified association may highlight ADHD-related eating behaviors, the influence of UPF components on ADHD symptoms, or a combination of these factors.
