A new study finds a connection between gut bacteria and brain chemicals GABA and glutamate, highlighting potential implications for mental health. The research, however, emphasizes the need for cautious interpretation given its cross-sectional design.

In a significant study appearing in Molecular Psychiatry, researchers from the University of Surrey and the University of Roehampton examined the relationship between the gut microbiome and brain chemistry in a cohort of 61 healthy young women aged 17-25. Using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, the team measured GABA and glutamate levels in three specific brain regions, and analyzed stool samples via shotgun metagenomic sequencing to assess microbial metabolic potential.

Findings on Brain Chemistry and Microbial Pathways

The investigation revealed that interactions between the gut microbiota and brain neurochemistry are not uniform across different brain regions. Notably, the inferior occipital gyrus, which plays a role in visual processing, showed broad associations with microbial pathways, including those involved in glutamate degradation and GABA metabolism. Conversely, the anterior cingulate cortex and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex exhibited distinct microbial associations associated with cognitive and emotional functions, such as attention and emotion regulation.

Rather than affecting the brain as a whole, specific gut bacteria influence neurochemistry in region-specific ways—from sensory processing areas to networks governing mood and cognition.

Linking Gut Bacteria to Psychological Wellbeing

In addition to the neurochemical findings, the researchers also explored links between specific microbial pathways and psychological health indicators. They discovered correlations between certain gut microbial functions and self-reported measures of anxiety, depressive symptoms, and sleep quality. Specifically, a microbial pathway associated with GABA was linked to societal and trait anxiety, while pathways involved in tryptophan metabolism correlated with depressive symptoms. Additionally, a pathway involved in propionate production was associated with reduced sleep quality.
