Link Between Psychedelics and Dietary Choices Investigated in Large Study
A recent study involving over 21,000 UK adults indicates that lifetime use of psilocybin may be associated with adopting vegetarian diets and positive environmental attitudes. The findings, while notable, are drawn from observational data, limiting causal interpretations.
Study Overview and Background
Researchers explored the potential connections between the use of classic psychedelics, such as psilocybin and LSD, with dietary habits and environmental attitudes. This investigation stemmed from the growing interest in psychedelic substances, known for their impact on perception, mood, and cognition through serotonin receptor interaction. The analysis utilized data from the National Child Development Study (NCDS) and the British Cohort Study (BCS70), focusing on adults in their 30s and 40s during the 1999-2000 follow-ups.
Psychedelic Use and Dietary Behaviors
Approximately 10% of participants reported past psilocybin use, and 9% reported LSD use, with only a small fraction having used these substances in the preceding year. Notably, the analysis revealed that 14% of recent psilocybin users identified as vegetarians, compared to 4% of those who had never used the substance. The study indicated that past psilocybin users were 3.5 times more likely to be vegetarian, while those who used LSD showed a more modest association, with 10% of recent users identifying as vegetarian versus 6% of never-users.
In terms of dietary habits, previous psilocybin users reported higher consumption of salads and wholemeal bread, and lower intake of red meat and sweets. The distinctions, although statistically significant, were characterized as relatively modest overall, with the largest effects noted in wholemeal bread and red meat consumption.
Mediation by Environmental Attitudes
The researchers further examined the role of environmental attitudes in mediating the connections between psychedelic use and dietary choices. Their mediation analyses indicated full statistical mediation for the association between psilocybin use and vegetarianism, as well as partial mediation regarding reduced red meat consumption. Despite these intriguing findings, the study design precludes any assertion of direct causation.
Statistical analysis revealed that pro-environmental attitudes fully mediated the link between psilocybin use and vegetarian dietary choices.
Study Limitations and Future Directions
This observational study has certain limitations, including the inability to determine the sequence of psychedelic use in relation to dietary changes. Additionally, participants were not surveyed about the frequency or context of their psychedelic experiences, which may impact their dietary choices. The authors noted the risk of false-positive findings due to multiple statistical tests used in the analysis. Future research in the form of prospective cohort studies is suggested to further investigate these associations.
THE CNP TAKEAWAY
This study suggests a possible link between psilocybin use and healthier dietary choices, but the observational nature limits definitive conclusions. Awareness of environmental attitudes may play a role in these associations, highlighting the need for further research.
