Sugar Restriction in Early Life

Excessive sugar consumption is prevalent in contemporary diets, especially among pregnant individuals and young children. To understand the potential effects of reduced sugar intake, researchers examined a natural experiment stemming from sugar rationing in the UK during and after World War II. During this period, children under the age of two did not receive sugar rations, allowing scientists to assess long-term health outcomes in those born between 1951 and 1956.

Study Design and Findings

The research utilized health records from 60,394 participants enrolled in the UK Biobank. These individuals were categorized into three groups based on whether their early life included sugar rationing during gestation or infancy, or none at all, with the latter serving as the control group. The analysis revealed significant health benefits among individuals exposed to sugar restrictions. Specifically, they exhibited a 27% lower risk of dementia from any cause and a 46% reduction in Alzheimer’s disease incidence. Additionally, there was a 20% decrease in anxiety risk and an 11% decrease in depression risk, with no significant findings related to Parkinson’s disease.

Brain Structure and Aging

Further investigation involved MRI scans of a subset comprising 9,053 participants. After adjusting for confounding factors such as genetics, those who experienced sugar rationing showed a brain age approximately 0.39 years younger than expected. Enlargements of specific brain regions, notably the hippocampus and thalamus—crucial areas for memory and cognitive functions—were also noted.
