Media Pressure Makes High-Calorie Food Cues Feel Longer to Teen Girls

Research Methodology
The study utilized a quasi-experimental design involving 55 female adolescents from a private high school in southeastern France, averaging 16.5 years of age with a body mass index of 22.1 kg/m². Participants engaged in a computer-based temporal bisection task featuring both food images and non-food controls.
Initially, participants identified standard time durations of 400 ms and 1600 ms using non-food images. Subsequently, they were presented with intermediate durations (600–1400 ms) alongside food images of varying caloric content. Following the task, participants completed three validated questionnaires to gauge their exposure to media pressure, body appreciation, and potential eating disorder risk.
Key assessments included the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ), the Body Appreciation Scale (BAS), and the SCOFF questionnaire to evaluate eating disorder risk.
Findings and Implications
The analysis revealed a significant effect of image type on perceived duration, with high-calorie food images causing participants to overestimate time compared to low-calorie images. Notably, 69% of the participants screened positive for eating disorder risk, although these were not clinical diagnoses.
The interaction between perceived media pressure and image type was particularly significant. Participants with higher SATAQ scores exhibited a greater tendency to overestimate time for high-calorie food images. Interestingly, the effect of image type was not significant when accounting for body appreciation, though a slight trend indicated increased body appreciation could reduce perceived temporal distortion.
Overall, while findings underscore the influence of sociocultural pressures on time perception of food among female adolescents, they remain associative due to the non-experimental nature of the measures taken. Thus, further investigation is warranted to fully understand causal relationships and to determine if these effects generalize beyond the studied population.
