The potential for military diets to reduce depression, suicide, and impulsive aggression: a review of current evidence for omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids

The psychological well-being of military personnel is critical for operational effectiveness, yet many face challenges related to mental health. A potential avenue for improvement lies in dietary interventions, specifically the inclusion of highly unsaturated essential fatty acids (HUFAs). Research indicates that adherence to Mediterranean dietary patterns can significantly lower the incidence of clinical depression.

Several meta-analyses of prospective cohort studies support the notion that these diets may be protective against depressive symptoms. Notably, a decline in fish consumption coupled with an increase in omega-6 fatty acids correlates with a heightened risk for clinical depression. Conversely, a meta-analysis focusing on tissue composition has found moderate to strong evidence linking higher intakes of omega-3 HUFAs—specifically eicosapentaenoic acid, docosapentaenoic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid—to reduced depressive symptoms. Additionally, another review of randomized placebo-controlled trials presents moderate to strong evidence suggesting that formulations with more than 50% eicosapentaenoic acid lead to significant improvements in clinically diagnosed depression. Furthermore, modest evidence from a meta-analysis indicates the potential benefits of omega-3 HUFAs in addressing attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Given these findings, a strategic rebalancing of essential fatty acids in the diets of U.S. military personnel to align more closely with that of traditional Mediterranean diets could mitigate psychiatric distress and enhance overall force efficacy.
