GLP-1 Medications on the Rise

New glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medications, including Mounjaro and Wegovy, are transforming obesity management. In the United States, approximately 12.5% of adults have utilized these medications, with around 6% currently using one. The trend is mirrored in the United Kingdom, where nearly 10% express recent use or interest in these treatments.

Research has demonstrated that GLP-1 medications can lead to substantial weight loss, with studies reporting losses between 10% and 22% of initial body weight over a span of 1 to 1.5 years, including many individuals achieving losses of 20% or more. While the benefits are clear, the rapid growth in GLP-1 use has spurred considerable discussion regarding societal attitudes toward their use.

Stigmatization and Misconceptions

Negative societal attitudes towards users of GLP-1 medications have emerged, echoing sentiments often seen in discussions around weight loss surgery. Individuals utilizing these treatments sometimes report feelings of being labeled as taking the “easy way out” or accused of “cheating.” Research suggests that those who lose weight through GLP-1 usage are viewed more negatively than those who achieve weight loss through diet and exercise, sometimes even more so than individuals maintaining a higher weight.

Such stigmatizing views can lead to users feeling the need to conceal their medication use from friends and family, driven by fears of judgment and misunderstanding.

The Complexity of Obesity Management

Weight is influenced by a multitude of factors beyond individual control, including genetics, hormones, sleep patterns, and mental health. Therefore, weight management can be a challenging endeavor. Traditional behavioral weight-loss programs often yield minimal results, with weight regain being a common occurrence.

GLP-1 medications primarily function by decreasing feelings of hunger and reducing cravings, creating a space for healthier eating behaviors. However, these medications should not be viewed as a shortcut; their efficacy is contingent upon ongoing support regarding one’s eating habits and emotional relationship with food. Research indicates that discontinuing these medications commonly results in quick weight regain.
