The association of dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) and Mediterranean diet with mental health, sleep quality and chronotype in women with overweight and obesity: a cross-sectional study

Mental and sleep disorders are major public health concerns, particularly in Middle Eastern countries, and are closely linked to circadian rhythms. This study examined the relationship between adherence to the Mediterranean and DASH diets and mental health, sleep quality, and circadian rhythm in 266 overweight and obese women. Findings: Mediterranean diet: Higher adherence was inversely associated with mild to moderate anxiety (p < 0.05). DASH diet: Greater adherence was linked to a lower risk of severe depression and extreme stress (p < 0.05). Both diets: Higher adherence was associated with better sleep quality (p < 0.05). Circadian rhythm: A significant relationship was found with the DASH diet (p < 0.05). Adherence to the DASH and Mediterranean diets is associated with improved sleep quality, better mental health, and healthier circadian rhythms in overweight and obese women of childbearing age.
