What is a healthy Nordic diet? Foods and nutrients in the NORDIET study

The Healthy Nordic Diet (HND), characterized by foods from the Nordic countries, significantly enhances blood lipid profiles, improves insulin sensitivity, and reduces blood pressure and body weight in individuals with hypercholesterolemia. This research aims to delineate and contrast the food and nutrient composition of the ND against a Swedish reference population (SRP) and the recommended intake (RI) and average requirement (AR) outlined by the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNR). The analysis involved a cohort of 44 men and women (mean age 53±8 years, BMI 26±3) participating in a 6-week ND intervention. Findings revealed that the ND featured a higher consumption of plant-based foods, fish, eggs, and vegetable fats, coupled with a lower intake of meat products, dairy, sweets, desserts, and alcoholic beverages (p0.3). The macronutrient distribution of protein, fat, and carbohydrates during the ND complied with recommended intakes. Furthermore, vitamin and mineral consumption exceeded average requirements, while sodium intake was below the recommended levels. In summary, the ND is predominantly plant-based, aligning with dietary guidelines and associated with reduced morbidity and mortality rates.
