Effect of anti-inflammatory diets based on complementary and alternative medicine in multiple sclerosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials
The connection between dietary choices and the modulation of inflammation has gained significant interest, particularly in the realm of complementary medicine. This research directly explores how anti-inflammatory diets may affect clinical manifestations in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), offering valuable insights for clinician-researchers.
In the methodology, a meticulous search was conducted across various databases including Scopus, MEDLINE (PubMed), ScienceDirect, EMBASE, Google Scholar, Central Cochrane Library, and the Web of Science, encompassing trials published up to December 2025. To evaluate the quantitative data, random-effects models were applied using Stata 14.
The analysis included 246 entries, which identified 10 Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) involving 332 participants, with a mean disease duration of 8.7 years. The pooled results indicated a significant reduction in fatigue severity, with a Weighted Mean Difference (WMD) of −7.10 (95% Confidence Interval [CI] = −13.61 to −0.59; P = 0.032). Furthermore, there was a noteworthy improvement in the physical health score, with a WMD of 2.59 (95% CI: 0.17 to 5.00; P = 0.036).
In conclusion, the findings suggest that anti-inflammatory diets could positively influence the clinical symptoms associated with MS, particularly in reducing fatigue and enhancing physical health.
