Association of healthy eating index (2015) with depression and anxiety symptoms
Adolescence is a critical period of rapid growth, marked by changes in body composition, cognitive development, and psychosocial well-being. A healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition and regular physical activity, supports optimal growth, academic performance, and long-term health by reducing the risk of chronic nutrient-related diseases. This study examined the relationship between the Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015) and depression and anxiety among Iranian adolescent girls.A cross-sectional design was used, involving 412 high school girls aged 12–17 years. Data on diet, sociodemographic factors, and anthropometric measurements were collected. HEI scores and physical measures were assessed, while depression and anxiety levels were evaluated using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-42 (DASS-42). Findings revealed an inverse relationship between HEI scores and both depression and anxiety. Adolescents with higher healthy eating index (HEI) scores were significantly less likely to experience these mental health conditions (P < 0.0001), suggesting that better diet quality is associated with improved mental well-being in this population.
