Cognitive Impairments Observed

Research conducted by Hiroya Yamada’s team at Fujita Health University School of Medicine reveals that adult rats born to mothers who consumed high fructose corn syrup during pregnancy exhibited poor performance in learning and memory assessments. Compared to control groups, these rats showed significant deficits in standardized spatial navigation tasks, suggesting that the negative effects on cognition extend well into adulthood.

Impact on Neural Development

The study further examined the underlying biological mechanisms, discovering that prenatal exposure to fructose significantly hampered the neurogenesis process in regions of the brain associated with learning and memory. The neural stem cells in these areas displayed a marked reduction in their ability to divide and differentiate into new neurons. Notably, researchers identified multiple structural anomalies within these stem cells, including decreased cell division rates and dysregulated gene expression.

Epigenetic Modifications and Their Consequences

Yamada’s research team carefully analyzed the epigenetic modifications that occurred due to high fructose intake during pregnancy. They found that this dietary choice introduced distinct chemical tags on the DNA of fetal NSCs. These tags alter gene activity, effectively silencing critical genes necessary for healthy brain development, and these effects persisted into adulthood. In experiments aimed at reversing this damage, restoring normal gene expression levels in the affected NSCs allowed them to regain their capacity for division and neurogenesis.
