Cognitive performance in nutritional psychology refers to how efficiently and accurately a person carries out mental tasks — attention, working memory, processing speed, learning and memory, executive function, and decision-making — in the course of everyday activities such as working, studying, driving, managing a household, or navigating social interactions, and under the ordinary conditions that shape them, including fatigue, stress, time pressure, and inadequate sleep.
Cognitive performance is treated as a bidirectional variable: dietary intake patterns influence the neural, metabolic, inflammatory, and gut-brain systems that support these processes across acute, habitual, and long-term timescales, while cognitive performance in turn shapes attention to food cues, reward valuation, self-regulation, and the food choices a person makes and repeats.
