Implementation strategies for integrating nutrition into mental health care: insights from the nourishing minds project
The relationship between nutrition and mental health is gaining recognition, highlighting the need for effective integration of dietary practices in mental health treatment. The Nourishing Minds initiative aimed to enhance this integration by conducting participatory workshops across Germany and Finland.
In 2025, two distinct series of workshops were held in Augsburg, Germany, and Kuopio, Finland, with each workshop tailored to address local needs. The German sessions focused on foundational concepts and co-developing basic interventions, while the Finnish workshops delved into more sophisticated strategies, emphasizing the incorporation of nutrition professionals into mental health care pathways.
Using interactive formats such as World Cafés facilitated reflection and enabled participants to share experiences and devise actionable strategies. In Germany, attendees indicated that nutrition currently plays a limited role in mental health care, despite increasing patient demand for such services. Some facilities have initiated small projects, such as cooking groups, yet challenges remain. Obstacles include rigid meal planning, unclear responsibilities, space limitations, and insufficient expertise.
Despite these barriers, there was strong interest among participants in expanding nutrition-related activities. During the collaborative World Café discussions, participants developed four specific project ideas to enhance awareness, foster multi-professional collaboration, and optimize the use of existing resources.
In contrast, the Finnish workshops concentrated on advanced integration models for nutrition professionals, with ongoing analysis to assess outcomes. Overall, the workshops demonstrated effectiveness in crafting context-specific strategies and fostering stakeholder commitment. The findings underscore the necessity of cross-disciplinary collaboration, clear role delineation, and institutional adaptability to facilitate the successful incorporation of nutrition into mental health care.
