Research Overview and Methodology

A study published in Nature Communications by researchers at APC Microbiome Ireland examined the effects of coffee on mental well-being and gut microbiome composition. The investigation included a sample of 62 individuals, divided into 31 coffee drinkers and 31 non-coffee drinkers. Participants initially abstained from coffee for two weeks, followed by a blinded trial in which they were reintroduced to either caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee.

Key Findings on Mood and Stress Levels

The results showed a significant reduction in perceived stress, depression, and impulsivity in both groups after coffee consumption resumed. Interestingly, this improvement in mood occurred irrespective of the caffeine content in the coffee consumed. Additionally, the study revealed distinct differences in gut bacteria profiles between coffee drinkers and non-drinkers, notably an increase in bacteria such as Eggertella sp and Cryptobacterium curtum.

Cognitive Benefits Linked to Coffee Consumption

Further analysis indicated that cognitive effects varied according to the type of coffee consumed. Participants who drank decaffeinated coffee reported enhancements in learning and memory. In contrast, those who consumed caffeinated coffee noted benefits such as reduced anxiety, improved vigilance, and attention, along with a decreased risk of inflammation.

THE CNP TAKEAWAY

Research suggests that coffee, regardless of caffeine content, may offer beneficial effects on mood and cognitive function while modulating gut microbiota. Consider incorporating it thoughtfully into a balanced diet.
