Vegetarian diet and depression scores: A meta-analysis

The aim of this 2021 meta-analysis was to clear up any confusion around the association between vegetarian diet and depression scores. Several studies have reported lower depression scores in vegetarians, while other studies have suggested a link between the vegetarian diet and higher depression scores. This meta-analysis included studies that assessed the depression scores of both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. The final dataset included 49,889 participants (from 13 studies). The results showed that vegetarians scored higher than non-vegetarians in terms of depression. The authors add that variability between the included studies was high, and that study location did not vary too much. Nevertheless, this meta-analysis found that vegetarians scored higher than non-vegetarians with regards to depression severity. More empirical research is perhaps still required to confirm these conclusions. [NPID: depression, vegetarian, vegetables, veg, vegetarian diet, meta-analysis, healthy eating, health, nutrition]
