The psychology of food cravings: the role of food deprivation
In this 2020 article, Meule summarizes the recent findings on the effects of food deprivation on food cravings. The possible causal link between dieting and food cravings have been suggested to be mediated by physiological and psychological mechanisms, but the role of food deprivation in this relationship had not yet been clarified. According to experimental studies, selectively depriving oneself of food raises craving levels for these avoided foods, but it may be possible to unlearn the conditional response that is craving. Long-term energy restriction has been reported to decrease food cravings in intervention studies. The overweight adults who participated in these intervention studies showed greater cravings caused by short-term food restrictions, but the long-term results suggested that food deprivation could result in the unconditioning of the food craving responses.
