The Mediterranean diet and the Western diet in adolescent Depression-current Reports
One of the most common mental health conditions in the world, depression, is becoming a bigger social and health issue. Although this problem impacts adults, children and adolescents are becoming more likely to experience it. Preventing, diagnosing, and treating mood disorders in adolescence is vital, as adolescent depression increases the risk of future depression and other mental health conditions in adulthood. This study by Zielińska et al. (2022) aimed to evaluate the role of dietary patterns, particularly the Mediterranean diet, as a modifiable risk factor for depression, making it a potential prevention and early intervention strategy. Studies indicated that while the Mediterranean diet may reduce the risk and symptoms of depression among teens, Western diets impact the incidence and severity of depression negatively. Although research on adolescent populations is expanding, there are still not enough longitudinal and clinical studies on this topic. Adjusting dietary habits could be an effective approach to preventing and treating depression in adolescents, making the diet a crucial and modifiable factor in preventing mental health disorders.
