Role of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in mental health-studies from Japan
Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are a family of dietary fats that have several health benefits and include several members such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) found in fish, and α-linolenic acid which is found in perilla oil. As per Hamazaki (2019), following a landmark study in Greenland more than five decades ago, the protective effects of EPA in cardiovascular conditions were established, and it became available as a nutritional supplement during the 1990s. In this article, the author presents the growing body of epidemiological literature and clinical trials that investigate EPA and its use in mental health conditions, particularly, in depressive disorders.
