Pychosocial benefits of cooking interventions: a systematic review
This 2018 review examined the literature on the influence of cooking interventions on psychosocial outcomes. There seems to be limited information on how culinary interventions affect psychosocial aspects although they are used in therapy and rehabilitation. The criteria for finding eligible studies included: written in English, adult participants, and related to the effect of cooking interventions on psychosocial outcomes. While 11 studies ultimately met this criterion, the quality of the research was weak due to lack of randomization, the use of unvalidated tools, and small sample size. Nevertheless, inpatient and community-based cooking interventions were found to have positive impacts on psychosocial outcomes such as socialization, self-esteem, quality of life, and affect. After analyzing the available evidence, Farmer et al. suggest that cooking interventions may positively influence psychosocial outcomes. Although it should be noted that proof is limited and preliminary.
