Psychosocial profiles influencing healthy dietary behaviors among adolescents in Shandong Province, China: a cross-sectional study

This study by Shi et al. (2024) examined how psychosocial characteristics influence eating habits among Chinese school-age teenagers. In a cross-sectional survey, 7,862 teenagers from 100 schools in Shandong, China participated. The participants’ average age was 13.18 ± 1.15 years, with 48.5% being boys. Most participants (97.90%) were Han Chinese, and nearly half (50.90%) lived in rural areas. Higher psychosocial profile ratings were positively linked to healthy eating habits after controlling for family computer and Internet use and sociodemographic characteristics. According to stratified analysis, global dietary reference (GDR) scores were higher for teenagers with the highest psychosocial profile scores, especially in homes without a computer or Internet. The authors conclude that healthy eating practices are associated with positive psychosocial characteristics. The authors state that policymakers should concentrate on Internet usage to increase the beneficial influence on young people’s health practices.
