Nutritional therapies for mental disorders

Nutritional therapies for mental disorders:
Considering the higher rates of mental disorders in the United States and other developed countries relative to nations such as China, Lakhan & Vieira (2008) believe that different healthcare systems and providers could explain the contrasting figures, and may as well be due to the lack of certain dietary nutrients consumed in America and other developed countries. Most notably, Americans (especially patients with mental disorders) seem to neglect consumption of essential vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids. While daily supplementation of important nutrients can help control the likes of: major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders, eating disorders, attention deficit disorder/attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD), addiction, and autism. This article summarizes the daily supplements and nutritional therapies that can particularly benefit patients with major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). With many antidepressants and drugs with severe side effects on the market, the psychiatrists can rather choose to recommend doses of dietary supplements based on efficacious studies.
