Nutrition as metabolic treatment for anxiety

This 2021 review discusses the nutritional interventions that can potentially address the underlying metabolic pathologies associated with mental illnesses and anxiety. Since medications and psychotherapy often fail to resolve patients’ symptoms completely, it may be effective combining treatment with nutritional plans. Norwitz & Naidoo try to integrate different insights from the nutrition science literature to raise awareness of practices that may be beneficial to individuals with anxiety symptoms. The researchers inspected the research on the avoidance of artificial sweeteners and gluten, incorporation of omega-3 fatty acids and turmeric in the diet, implementation of the ketogenic diet, and supplementation with vitamin D. The roles of the microbiome and inflammation in anxiety were also explored. It should be noted that this article is not a comprehensive review of the literature but offers the authors’ perspectives on nutritional interventions and their potential impacts. Nutritional Psychiatry is still in its early stages, but there are interventions that should be given greater consideration by clinical psychologists.
