Mitochondrial dynamics in the brain are associated with feeding, glucose homeostasis, and whole-body metabolism
This 2020 study explains that while it is the brain’s responsibility to maintain whole-body homeostasis, it is the hypothalamus’ and dorsal vagal complex (DVC)’s role to regulate metabolic processes whilst sensing both hormones and nutrients. Haigh et al. (2020) highlight that the mitochondria contribute to the maintenance of energy homeostasis by responding to the level of nutrient availability, and metabolic diseases e.g. obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) disturb these processes. Mitochondria also plays a role in regulating glucose, and controlling whole-body metabolism, and therefore are pivotal in the development and maintenance of obesity and T2D. This 2021 article highlights the importance of diet in maintaining health, particularly as people age. Specifically diets high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory potential (those found in nuts, fruits, vegetables, and fish) have been implicated in the reduction of age-related cognitive decline and the risk of degenerative disease development. While there have been many studies published […]
Over the last decades, a substantial increase was seen in the prevalence of mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, cognitive, and sleep disorders. Diet and its bioactive components have been recognized as modifiable risk factors, possibly influencing their pathogenesis. This review aimed to summarize molecular mechanisms underlying the putative beneficial effects toward brain health of […]
