A western dietary pattern during pregnancy is associated with neurodevelopmental disorders in childhood and adolescence

The relationship between maternal nutrition during pregnancy and the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in children is a crucial area of research, yet it has not received adequate attention. A recent study reveals that adherence to a Western dietary pattern while pregnant may significantly elevate the risk of such disorders in offspring.

In examining the COPSAC2010 cohort of 508 participants, the researchers found notable correlations between maternal dietary habits reported at 24 weeks of gestation and the incidence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism diagnoses assessed at 10 years of age. The ADHD findings were further substantiated by analyses involving three additional extensive mother–child cohorts, with sample sizes of 59,725, 656, and 348, utilizing self-reported dietary assessments alongside maternal and fetal blood metabolomics.

Through metabolomic analysis, the study identified 15 specific metabolites during pregnancy that serve as mediators, enhancing the predictive capacity for ADHD. This analysis also incorporated longitudinal data, with blood samples collected at five time points across two independent cohorts, enabling a robust understanding of the association between Western dietary pattern metabolite scores and neurodevelopmental outcomes. The results consistently indicated significant associations during the early to mid-pregnancy phase.

These findings underscore the importance of dietary choices made during pregnancy and suggest that targeted nutritional interventions could potentially prevent the emergence of neurodevelopmental disorders in children. Emphasizing early intervention, this research advocates for greater awareness of maternal diet as a critical factor in child development.
