Ketogenic Diet and the Skin
Dietary changes, particularly the ketogenic diet (KD), which is low in carbohydrates and high in fats with adequate protein, have become a focus in dermatology for managing skin disorders. This interest is fueled by emerging research from various studies, including basic science, small clinical trials, and population reports, suggesting KD’s potential as a supportive treatment for skin conditions due to its anti-inflammatory effects. This review aims to inform dermatologists about KD’s possible applications in treating skin issues such as acne, psoriasis, and hidradenitis suppurativa. It also addresses possible adverse reactions related to KD, like prurigo pigmentosa and nutritional deficiencies, to provide a comprehensive overview of its effects on skin health.
