Interoceptive awareness and its relationship to hippocampal dependent processes
This 2016 study explored the possible association between interoceptive awareness with performance on a hippocampal dependent learning and memory (HDLM) measure in logical memory percent retention, among healthy young adults. Interoceptive awareness was assessed on three tasks: heart rate tracking; water loading and the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness Questionnaire (MAIA). After controlling for potentially confounding variables, significant associations were revealed between HDLM performance and MAIA measures as well as water loading. These results implicate the role of hippocampal dependent processes in interoceptive awareness in healthy young adults, and may suggest the medial temporal lobe structures regulate interoceptive tasks (which includes ingestion).
