Higher global diet quality score is related to lower prevalence of depression and poor quality of life among adolescent girls

Depression symptoms tend to emerge around adolescence, and a potential connection between mental health issues and nutrition quality may exist. This cross-sectional study by Beigrezaei et al. (2023) looked at the relationship between depression and teenagers’ quality of life (QoL) using the global diet quality score (GDQS), a straightforward and standardized measure of diet quality. Seven hundred thirty-three randomly chosen teenage females submitted a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) consisting of 147 items to evaluate dietary consumption. Subsequently, a 25 food categories’ combined scores, which range from 0 to 49, were added up to determine the This cross-sectional study by Beigrezaei et al. (2023) looked at the relationship between depression and teenagers’ quality of life (QoL) using the global diet quality score (GDQS). The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) – Persian version – was used to measure depression symptoms. The Short Form 12 Survey–version 2 (SF-12v2) questionnaire was used to evaluate health-related QoL. Analysis of the results demonstrated that the chances of depressive symptoms were 41% lower in adolescent females in the highest tertile of the GDQS score as compared to those in the lowest tertile. Compared to the first tertile, those in the third tertile of the GDQS score had decreased odds of poor QoL. Even after controlling for age, calorie consumption, body mass index (BMI), physical activity, and menstruation, these relationships were still significant. The authors concluded that teenage females with higher GDQS scores were less likely to experience depression and experiencing poorer QoL. To arrive at a clear vision, prospective and interventional studies are required. [NPID: Depression, quality of life, GDQS, cross sectional, adolescents]
