Effect of intake of selected nutrients on skin firmness and elasticity in women

The proper functioning of the skin is closely linked to a balanced diet. The purpose of this study by Podgórska et al. (2024) was to investigate how particular nutrients affect different aspects of the skin. 59 women, divided into two age groups (under 40 and over 40), participated in the study. Participants underwent a three-day, 24-hour dietary recall interview, and skin parameters were assessed using the Courage + Khazaka method. The study found that several nutrients, including linoleic acid (LA), alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), dietary fiber, sodium (Na), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), vitamin E, thiamine, riboflavin, folates, vitamins B6, B12, and C, were correlated with skin elasticity. Furthermore, skin elasticity was found to be influenced exclusively by vitamin D, which also affected skin firmness. The findings suggest that a diet rich in essential nutrients positively contributes to the maintenance of key skin parameters.
