Early-life sugar rationing, brain aging, and long-term neurodegenerative and psychiatric health outcomes: a population-based natural experiment study
The nutritional environment during early development plays a significant role in shaping adult brain health. A recent investigation used the UK’s historical sugar rationing as a natural experiment to assess the effects of early-life sugar restriction on the prevalence of neurodegenerative and psychiatric conditions in later life. The study analyzed data from 60,394 participants in the UK Biobank, born between 1951 and 1956. Participants were categorized into three groups: those exposed to sugar restriction only during pregnancy, those exposed during the prenatal period and the subsequent two years, and a control group not subject to rationing.
Findings indicated that individuals who experienced sugar restrictions during the critical first 1,000 days post-conception exhibited significantly lower risks of all-cause dementia (27% reduction), Alzheimer’s disease (46% reduction), depression (11% reduction), and anxiety (20% reduction) when compared to their non-rationed counterparts. The analysis of dose-response relationships revealed that the protective effects against depression and anxiety intensified when the period of sugar restriction extended beyond six months after birth.
When examining the data by sex, consistent protective effects were observed in women regarding Alzheimer’s, depression, and anxiety. Neuroimaging results showed evidence of slowed brain aging, with a 0.39-year reduction in the brain age gap and alterations in brain structure, including diminished gray-white matter contrast and increased volume in subcortical areas such as the hippocampus and thalamus. Minimal effects were noted for those exposed to sugar restrictions only during the prenatal period. These quasi-experimental results underscore the potential of early-life dietary interventions, particularly sugar intake, as a modifiable factor to enhance lifelong brain health and reduce the risk of cognitive decline and psychiatric disorders.
