Dietary inflammatory index and the risk of frailty among older adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Moradi et al. (2020) conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis, using frailty risk data from 5 studies (13,908 older adults) and frailty-related parameters results from 2 studies (sample of 7539), to examine the association between Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®) score with frailty risk. Positive associations were discovered between DII score with frailty risk (OR = 1.24, 95%CI: 1.6-1.33, P < 0.001, I2 = 0.0%), and between DII score with weakness risk (OR = 1.12, 95%CI: 1.05-1.19, P = 0.014, I2 = 0.0%). Apart from weakness risk, other frailty-related parameters (exhaustion, low BMI, low physical activity) did not show correlations with DII score. Also prospective cohort studies with longer follow-up periods are required to support this potential association between DII score and frailty risk, the findings of this meta-analysis suggest that older adults who score highly on DII are at a greater risk of frailty.
