Diet, microbiota and memory: How what we eat affects memory and cognitive processes and whether diet can help prevent the onset of Dementia
Growing attention to the gut–brain axis has raised the possibility that everyday dietary patterns shape long-term cognitive trajectories and dementia risk. Sucharska and colleagues situate their review within this rising interest, framing diet not as an isolated exposure but as a systemic input that acts on the central nervous system through metabolic, inflammatory, and microbiota–mediated pathways relevant to memory and neurodegeneration.
The authors set out to synthesize recent evidence on how diet influences memory and cognition, and whether dietary change can help prevent the onset of dementia. The review is organized in three parts: animal studies linking specific macronutrient ratios to behavioral disturbances and to biomarkers of neurodegenerative processes; human studies on the cognitive and memory effects of diets varying in carbohydrates, proteins, and fats; and clinical work on dietary and multifactorial lifestyle interventions in older adults and patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
Across the human evidence, cognitive deterioration was most consistent in groups with high-fat intake and caloric surplus leading to obesity, with obesity-driven inflammation — including within the central nervous system — emerging as a central mechanism linking dietary quality to dementia risk. The most favorable outcomes were observed with adherence to the Mediterranean and Mediterranean–DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diets, which, in most reviewed studies, were associated with slower dementia progression, particularly when combined with broader lifestyle changes.
Read as a review, this work supports diet quality — especially Mediterranean and MIND patterns — as a modifiable contributor to memory preservation and dementia prevention, mediated in part by adiposity, systemic and neuroinflammation, and gut microbiota signaling. The authors themselves are cautious: the strongest effects were observed alongside comprehensive lifestyle change, so single-nutrient or single-diet conclusions cannot be drawn from the reviewed literature, and causal claims about dementia prevention remain provisional pending longer controlled trials.
