Adolescence as a key developmental window for nutrition promotion and cardiometabolic disease prevention
Adolescence represents a critical developmental phase for promoting nutrition and preventing cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs), offering substantial long-term health, economic, and social benefits. Despite its importance, this period is currently underrepresented within the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) framework. This perspective article posits that adolescence should be recognized within the DOHaD paradigm by reviewing existing evidence that links adolescent nutrition to CMD risk factors, elucidating the physiological mechanisms involved, and suggesting potential interventions to mitigate health risks.
