Chrononutrition is a field of nutrition science that examines how the timing, frequency, and temporal distribution of food intake interact with the body’s endogenous circadian rhythms to influence physiological functioning, metabolic health, and behavior.
The circadian system, driven by a central clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus and peripheral clocks in metabolic tissues, regulates 24-hour cycles of hormone release, energy metabolism, digestion, and cognition; while light is the primary synchronizer of the central clock, feeding schedules serve as key synchronizers of peripheral clocks. Misalignment between eating patterns and circadian biology — as seen in shift work, late-night eating, or irregular meal timing — has been associated with impaired glucose and lipid metabolism, weight dysregulation, disrupted sleep, and altered mood and cognitive performance.
Chrononutrition research examines strategies such as time-restricted eating and meal-timing consistency for their effects on metabolic, cognitive, and psychological outcomes.
