Unhealthy diets, unhealthy futures: How modern eating patterns endanger maternal and offspring health

As the prevalence of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) continues to rise globally, their consumption poses significant health risks, particularly during critical developmental phases like pregnancy and early childhood. This narrative review investigates the consequences of UPF intake on both maternal and child health, emphasizing the importance of understanding its effects on gut microbiota composition.

Evidence has consistently linked UPF consumption with a range of adverse health outcomes, including heightened risks for obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and overall mortality. Specifically, during pregnancy, a high intake of UPFs correlates with decreased diet quality, excessive weight gain, increased inflammatory markers, and negative neonatal outcomes. These outcomes include altered microbiota transmission and compromised neurodevelopment.

In early childhood, the consumption of UPFs is associated with dysbiosis of gut microbiota, the onset of obesity, deficiencies in essential micronutrients, and an increase in allergic conditions. Importantly, the dietary patterns established by mothers play a crucial role in shaping children’s early and ongoing exposure to UPFs.

Overall, the intake of UPFs during pregnancy and early life represents a modifiable risk factor that could have enduring implications for health. A thorough examination of the connections among diet, microbiota, and health is vital for devising effective nutritional interventions to enhance maternal and child health outcomes and mitigate the long-term risk of chronic diseases.
