Influence of diet on the gut microbiome and implications for human health
This 2017 study finds that diet not only influences risk of chronic diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, but may also play a significant role in shaping the microbiome. There is evidence suggesting that dietary changes may even trigger temporary microbial shifts within 24 hours. Microbiota manipulation through diet may be a viable and therapeutic strategy. This review breaks down the current research on the impacts of common dietary components on microbiota in the gut. According to the authors, eating particular food types produces predictable shifts in existing host bacterial genera. Additionally, these bacteria can affect host immunity and certain metabolic parameters, showing many implications for human health.
