Park et al. (2020) test whether cognition can affect plasma glucose levels in 30 individuals with type 2 diabetes (where the body doesn’t utilize insulin). All the participants were given a beverage with the same ingredients but the drink was labeled with deceptive nutritional information. The subjects’ sugar levels in the blood were then measured four times before and following beverage consumption. It was revealed that when the participants believed that the drink contained large amounts of sugar as written on the labels, their blood sugar levels were elevated. The authors add that individual eating behaviors and nutritional satisfaction are connected to the sugar concentration in their bloodstream. These results support the concept that the body can anticipate sugar intake and react by regulating its metabolism. The implications of this study are that psychological intervention programs could play an influential role in diabetes management, even beyond the current programs that involve controlling diet, exercise, and medications.
