The purpose of this 2020 review was to present the recently reported evidence of diet’s effects in preventing and reducing age-related cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases. Angeloni et al. (2020) tell us that nutraceuticals and whole diet approaches have recently been reported to protect against cognitive impairment due to aging, and neurodegeneration. This review discusses the whole diet (Mediterranean Diet, Nordic Ketogenic for example) versus the single nutrient approach (polyphenols, B vitamins etc.) and the potential mechanisms of action underlying these beneficial effects. The authors believed that large-scale preventative measures should be implemented based on dietary patterns identified as having a positive impact on brain health and should be regarded as a research and public health priority.
