This 2020 paper enhances our understanding on the effects of diet and specific nutrients on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a major neurodevelopmental disorder often featuring impairments in communication and restricted interests or behaviors in childhood and adolescence. This review examined several studies that analyzed the relationship between ASD and diet to provide a comprehensive update in knowledge in this area of research. While a variety of genetic, epigenetic, neurological, hormonal, or environmental factors may contribute synergistically to the development of ASD, Bjørklund et al. remind us of the importance of considering metabolic processes. A balanced diet consisting of appropriate amounts of essential and special nutrients, as well as adherence to the recommended calorie intake, is highly recommended to promote growth and development that withstand the physiological and behavioral challenges seen in children with autism. An aim of this review was to raise awareness of the possible nutritional deficiencies, metabolic impairments, and malnutrition in people with ASD, to emphasize the importance of those affected to develop and maintain better socio-behavioral habits and physical health.
