Vitamin D deficiency and antenatal and postpartum depression: A systematic review
This 2018 review examined the evidence on the link between vitamin D levels with antenatal depression (AD) and postpartum depression (PPD) since findings on these associations have been inconsistent. While a total of 239 relevant studies were identified, the two independent authors selected 14 to be included in this review. The quality of the included studies ranged from moderate to high. Of the 9 studies on postpartum depression, 5 (55%) demonstrated a strong correlation between vitamin D and postpartum depression. While five out of seven studies on antenatal depression indicated a significant association with vitamin D status. However, the data could not be transformed to measure one single effect due to the various effect estimates and statistical analyses used by the studies, and it was not possible to implement the meta-analytic techniques. Nevertheless, Aghajafari et al. declare that vitamin D status is significantly linked with antenatal and postpartum depression.
