The importance of marine omega-3s for brain development and the prevention and treatment of behavior, mood, and other brain disorders

According to DiNicolantonio & O’Keefe (2020), most of the humans on the planet lack long-chain marine omega-3s in their diet, especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) which is important for brain and eye development and even plays a significant role in mental health throughout early childhood and into adulthood. This review takes a look at the evidence on marine omega-3s in connection with mental health conditions, including studies that have demonstrated the promise of supplementation with marine omega-3s in improving several mental health-related outcomes. It is believed that the risk of developing numerous mental health issues (such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), autism, bipolar disorder, depression and suicidal ideation) are enhanced in individuals consuming low levels of marine omega-3.
