The effects of probiotics and prebiotics on mental disorders: A review on depression, anxiety, Alzheimer, and Autism Spectrum Disorders

In this 2020 review, the complex interactions between the GI microbiota, the brain, immune system and central nervous systems were discussed and the effectiveness of probiotics and prebiotics on important mental disorders summarized using the literature from 4 main scientific databases (Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect). Ansari et al. (2020) discloses data that suggest probiotics and prebiotics might enhance brain function through several mechanisms. Upon examining clinical studies, there is further evidence supporting probiotics’ and prebiotics’ application in depression, anxiety, Alzheimer and autism spectrum diseases. Although admittedly, additional clinical studies may be required as well as comparisons with current treatment made, to confirm the efficacy of probiotics and prebiotics, they possess the potential to treat common mental disorders.
