The effects of milk and dairy products on sleep: A systematic review

The impact of dairy and milk products’ consumption on the quantity and quality of sleep have been examined in several works. Geographical locations, quantities of milk and dairy products, research participants (sex, age, and race), and study methodologies have all varied in these investigations. The goal of the study by Komada et al. (2020) was to compile the available body of research and offer a consistent perspective on whether consuming milk and dairy products had an impact on sleep quality. The PRISMA guidelines were followed for conducting this systematic review. From the MeSH (medical subject headings) terms and descriptors in health sciences (DeHS) lists, the following keywords were selected as electronic database search terms: milk, yogurt, dairy product, cheese, sleep, human, observational research, and interventional study. As such, a total of 14 studies, comprising eight randomized controlled trials, one longitudinal research, two experimental studies with cross-over designs, and three cross-sectional studies, were included in this review. Two publications addressed children; four studies targeted older persons; three included toddlers; and six included adults, including university students. Despite inconsistent findings between research caused by variations in study populations and methodologies, the authors comment that these studies generally showed how well-balanced diets that includes milk and dairy products is helpful in enhancing sleep quality.
