The effect of nutrition on older people’s mental health

The aim of this 2019 narrative article was to provide practical guidance for healthcare professionals working with older adults experiencing mood disorders, and to raise awareness of some existing health issues. Harbottle (2019) found it imperative that the rise in occurrence of physical illness and of mood disorders among older adults are addressed. She believes the increased nutritional vulnerability that accompanies late adulthood is connected to the physiological impact of ageing as well as social and economic challenges. Specific nutrients and overall diet quality may influence mood, while depression and anxiety can affect interest in and ability to eat, which may further exacerbate problems/symptoms. The author raised these concerns for nurses either working with older adults living at home or in the care setting, since Harbottle (2019) regards it crucial that they are able to identify the signs, refer and support those who need the assistance.
