The associations between plant-based dietary indices with depression and quality of life and insomnia among Iranian adolescent girls in 2015

While prior research has investigated the relationship between plant-based diets and mental health, little attention has been given to the quality of plant foods in this context. Vasmehjani et al. (2024) involved 733 adolescent girls from urban areas in northeastern Iran. Quality of life (QoL), depression, and insomnia severity were measured using the SF-12v2 questionnaire, the Persian version of the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Iranian version of the Insomnia Severity Index. In contrast, a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) assessed dietary intake. The relationship between low quality of life (QoL), depression, sleeplessness, and plant-based dietary index (PDI) scores was investigated using binary logistic regression. The unadjusted model revealed that individuals in the highest quartile of healthy PDI had a lower likelihood of experiencing insomnia compared to those in the lowest quartile. On the other hand, those with unhealthy PDI (uPDI) in the highest percentile were more likely to experience depression than people with uPDI in the lowest quartile, and this significance remained even after controlling for additional confounding variables. In conclusion, studies have shown that a plant-based diet high in nutrients is connected with a decreased likelihood of insomnia, but a poor plant-based diet is linked to a higher risk of depression. To validate these conclusions, however, further research is paramount. [NPID: Plant-based diet index, sleep, depression, quality of life, adolescents]
