Rethinking healthy eating in light of the gut microbiome

National dietary guidelines worldwide have only begun to heed the surmounting evidence on the role of the gut microbiome and dietary intake on human physiology and dietary-related chronic diseases, which have now become an epidemic across the world. In this review by Armet et al. (2022), the authors present current discussions on novel dietary strategies, the controversies surrounding the role of nutrition, and present an experimental framework that utilizes the proposed microbiome-centered nutritional recommendations, based on published evidence on the physiological roles of the gut microbiome. Establishing an understanding of the fundamentals of microbiome physiology and the role of nutrition further corroborates current evidence behind dietary guideline recommendations, furthering the integration of microbiome-focused nutrition recommendations to fashion novel dietary strategies.[NPID: Dietary fiber, dietary guidelines, gut microbiome, healthy eating, microbiome epidemiology, nutrition controversies, nutritional microbiology, phytochemicals]
